- Federal law (FLSA): every hour over 40 in the workweek is paid at least 1.5 times your regular rate. A long day is not overtime by itself.
- California: over 8 hours in a day pays 1.5 times, over 12 pays double, and the seventh day in a row has its own rule. Hours already paid as daily overtime do not count again toward the 40.
- Alaska: over 8 hours in a day or 40 in the week pays 1.5 times, for employers with 4 or more employees; no double time. Nevada: the same 8 hours a day, but only if you earn less than 1.5 times the $12.00 state minimum, $18.00 an hour; from $18.00, only the hours over 40 in the week. In these states and Colorado each hour counts once: daily overtime first, then the regular hours over 40, so the week pays whichever count is larger.
- Colorado: over 12 hours in a workday or 40 in the week pays 1.5 times. Colorado also owes overtime after 12 consecutive hours that run into the next workday; the calculator takes hours by day, so it does not apply that part.
- Enter 0 for a day off. The week runs Monday to Sunday, and decimals work: 8 hours 15 minutes is 8.25.
